Angel Oak is a southern live oak tree located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island, Charleston, South Carolina. It is believed to be over 1,400 years old and is considered to be one of the oldest living organism, east of the Mississippi River.
It stands over 20 meters (65 feet) and approximately 2.7 meters (9 feet) in diameter. The crown shade covers an area of 1,600 square meter (17,000 square feet) and its longest limb is 27 meter (89 feet). Angel Oak Park is owned by the city of Charleston since 1991. The oak derives its name from the Angel estate, although folklore stories of ghosts of former slaves would appear as angels around the tree.
