Centralia is a borough in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It has been a deserted town since 1992, as an underground mine fire burning since 1962 has continuously destroyed the roads, caused the ground to collapse and caused damaged to houses. Over the years, this has forced the residents of Centralia to move out of town.
The fire was believed to have been started due to improper disposal of garbage, where fire was used to incinerate trash too close to the coal mine. The ignited coal wasn't detected and fires has since spread out of control. The underground mine fire is believed to last for another 250 years.
The town is mostly deserted with only a small handful of people still living there. The main road Pennsylvania Route 61 is closed due to unsafe road conditions.
