The Grand Canyon Skywalk is located on the edge of a side canyon, near the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon West area in Arizona, United States. This horseshoe shaped glass walkway is situated at a height of 1,200 meter (4,000 feet) above the cayon floor. This tourist attraction opened in March 2007 was funded by the Hualapai indian tribe and Chinese-American businessman David Jin.
This U-shaped skywalk protudes 20 meter out beyond the edge of the canyon, and its floor and walls are built from 10 cm (4 inches) thick glass that has a capacity to withstand 70 tons of weight. As a protection for the glass surfaces, visitors are issued fabric shoe covers that slide over their shoes before walking out onto the skywalk. There is also a policy that disallow individuals from bringing personal equipment such as cameras and cell phones onto the skywalk. Lockers are provided free of charge.
The Skywalk remains open in rain and snow conditions and carpeting is installed for visitor safety. The Grand Canyon Skywalk can be reached via the Grand Canyon West Airport terminal or a 190 km (120 mile) drive from Las Vegas.
