Lake Retba is located north of Cap-Vert peninsula, north-east of Dakar, Senegal. Also known as Lac Rose, the pink colour of the water is caused by cyanobacteria in the water.
The lake is also known for its high salt content, which like the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily. Lake Retba has a small salt collecting industry where many salt collectors work 6 to 7 hours a day in the lake, which has a salt content close to 40%.
This lake was featured on the Amazing Race 6 where teams had to collect salt in a basket from the bottom of the lake floor, and is often the finishing point of the Dakar Rally.
