The Popa Taung Kalat Monastery is built atop Taung Kalat, a pedestal hill that is located about 50 km (30 mile) southeast of Bagan in Mandalay, Myanmar. The monastery is about 737 meter (2,417 feet) above sea level and has 777 steps from the bottom all the way to the Taung Kalat Monastery.
The Popa Taung Kalat Monastery is believed to be home to 37 Mahagiri Nats (Spirits). There are statues depicting the Nats at the base of the monastery.
From the top of Taung Kalat, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area, Mount Popa and the ancient city of Bagan. Along the hike up Taung Kalat, besides enjoying the lush fauna there are macaque monkeys that have become quite a tourist attraction.
