Isla de Las Munecas

Isla de Las Munecas, Island of the Dolls, Federal District, Mexico

Isla de Las Munecas which means Island of the Dolls, is a popular creepy tourist destination located in the federal district of Mexico itself. Don Julian Santana, a hermit who renounced the world to inhabit the island spent his last fifty years to make the Island of the Dolls to please the spirit of a little girl who had drowned in the canal.

The island itself is on Teshuilo Lake, between Xochimilco and Mexico City. Don Julian is said to have led an isolated life except when he ventures out to collect old dolls, scavenged from garbage dumps or bought in exchange for his homegrown fruits and vegetables. Don Julian was discovered to have drowned in the canal surrounding his home in 2001. The island is now managed in custody by his family members and a small fee is charged to visit the island.
